In order to inform the CIBA members and guests, of the main provisions and obligations, arising from the General Data Protection Regulation coming into force in May 2018, as well as to assist and guide them, for the aim of compliance with these regulations, a GDPR workshop was organized.
This event was a huge success, highlighting the importance of this new regulation, as well as the need of the International Businesses, to be informed and prepared before this regulation comes into force.
The event was opened by the guest speaker, the Cyprus Data Protection Commissioner, Ms. Irinie Loizidou Nikolaidou, who gave a brief address on some of the core provisions of the Regulation 2016/679, the General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR and how these provisions apply to cyber resilience. In addition, she explained why the GDPR was an important economic tool and how it could help to boost EU economy and social integration with a positive impact on EU enterprises.
Following, Panicos Georgiou the Managing Director of eSafe Solutions Ltd and catalyst of the event, gave his presentation entitled “GDPR and Data Breach: how to manage the risk to achieve Cyber Resiliency”. Thereafter, Spyros Loizou the Senior Manager of Ernst & Young Cyprus Ltd., brought the workshop to a close with his presentation on GDPR stating amongst others that the GDPR was a game changer for organizations covering emerging technologies such as social networks and cloud computing. It introduced new requirements and more stringent data protection challenges, backed by fines of up to 4% of total annual worldwide turnover or €20M for non-compliance.
A short Q&A session ensued, after which attendees were able to mingle and meet the Cyprus Data Protection Commissioner and enjoy a social networking hour over drinks and canapes at the Four Seasons.
